The Brenner Base Tunnel is a planned 55-kilometre-long (34 mi) railway tunnel through the base of the Eastern Alps beneath the Brenner Pass. When complete (est 2025), it will be the world’s second longest tunnel (behind the Gotthard Base Tunnel), running from near Innsbruck, in Austria, to Fortezza, in Italy, replacing part of the current Brenner Railway. Impresa Pizzarotti was involved in the construction of the pilot tunnel Aica-Mules. Excavation was performed through a double shielded tunnel boring machine with a 6.3m diameter. Internal lining was realised with 42,000 in situ concrete precast segments.
